On the 29th April 2010, I was in the final stretch of my BA Fine Art course, caught in the whirlwind of painting, planning, and the impending degree show. Like all my peers, I was working frantically, pushing myself to complete a body of work to submit in our last and crucial module. I had set myself an ambitious challenge of six large scale paintings, each at least 170cm x 120cm. This seemed fitting for my last project at Norwich Art School.

The walls of the school were enormous, making even these vast pieces feel small. My studio space couldn’t contain the chaos, so my work spilled out into corridors, into my rented room – there was paint everywhere. I was completely immersed, lost in the hues and textures of my brushstrokes.

This painting holds a special place in my heart. The summer of 2010 was scorching, and everything in Norwich seemed bathed in golden light. There was a feeling of optimism in the air, my degree was almost complete, and I knew I’d soon be returning home. I wanted to capture that same golden glow in the land I missed, the way the sun turned fields into sweeping seas of amber, and how the shadows stretched long and soft across the hills. Every brushstroke became a memory, every layer of paint a quiet yearning for home.

When the degree show was finally hung, I stood back and saw it in full. Among all the paintings, this one stood out to me. It glowed.

Even now, years later, I feel that warmth radiating from the canvas. It’s not just a painting, it’s a memory of a golden summer, of hard work, of home. It belongs in a space where someone else can feel that warmth too. Where they can be reminded of the beauty of the landscape, the nostalgia of a place that lingers in the soul.
