Lily Pad
On the 22nd of July 2023, I drove down to Cornwall to visit a friend I hadn’t seen in far too long. Cornwall has always held a special place in my heart, though I don’t visit as often as I’d like. This trip wasn’t meant for research or painting inspiration, just a moment of respite, a chance to reconnect.

Between sightseeing and reminiscing, we found ourselves at the Eden Project on a day of torrential rain. I had never been before, and stepping into its lush, otherworldly domes was like entering a dream. Amidst the towering tropical plants, I stumbled upon a pond covered in the most striking water lilies. The dynamic shapes, the deep greens, and bursts of unexpected colour, it was mesmerising. I captured the moment in a photograph, knowing instantly it would become a painting.
Normally, I let an image influence my work rather than copying it directly. But this was different. Back home, I couldn’t bring myself to alter a thing. The composition was already perfect. Having lived in the Midlands, I had spent years painting water lilies, inspired by their quiet beauty on the canals. But these lilies were unlike any I had painted before, lush, bold, tropical. Their colours felt electric, almost alive.

This piece was a joy to paint, and I believe it’s a joy to look at. It carries the memory of that day, unexpected inspiration, the warmth of reconnecting, and the magic of stumbling upon beauty when you least expect it. Now, I think it’s ready for its next home, where it can bring that same sense of wonder to someone else.
