Front Garden Reflections

Visiting my childhood home in Wakefield on the 25th of June 2022, I was struck by the rose bush in the front garden. It had always been there, yet that day, it felt different, more vivid, more alive. The deep pinks caught the light in a way that made them almost glow. That year, I found myself gravitating more towards pink, a colour I’d never typically chosen, but one that suddenly felt right. I knew I had to capture it.

Back in my tiny home studio, I faced a challenge. I wasn’t sure how to approach the painting, what style, what technique. So, I began with the roses, letting them lead the way. As they took form, I realised the background didn’t need rigid shapes or definition. The colours alone could tell the story. Loose strokes of greens and soft pastels created a dreamlike haze, allowing the roses to bloom even more vibrantly.

This painting became more than just an image of flowers; it was a moment of rediscovery, a deep connection to home and memory. This year alone I’ve showcased it in exhibitions across Lancaster, Harrogate, and Leeds, sharing that feeling with others. Now, I believe it’s ready for its next chapter, a new home, where it can bring warmth, beauty, and a sense of nostalgia to someone else.
