Trees In Contrast

On the 6th of June 2022, I finally put paint to canvas. It had been over six months since I last painted, after a period off change, upheaval, and deep emotion. A new job, a new home, a new city. Life had shifted so dramatically, and in the whirlwind of moving to Leeds, my creative energy had been buried beneath it all. But I needed to paint.

In our rented flat, I carved out a tiny corner to work. The canvas was probably too big for the space, but I made it fit, determined to create something, anything. And yet, when I reached for my paints, my usual palette wasn’t there. Instead of familiar hues, I found myself drawn to deep reds, soft pinks, and moody purples tones I wouldn’t normally choose, but ones that carried the weight of everything I had been feeling.

Trees have always fascinated me. For years, I’ve returned to them, painting different scenes, different moods. There’s something grounding about them, their resilience, their quiet strength. This piece was no different. As the branches took shape on the canvas, they felt like a reflection of my own journey, rooted yet reaching, finding new space to grow, even after loss.

I first exhibited this painting at the APS Gallery for The Artist & The Other exhibition, and it felt like a full-circle moment. A piece created in a time of transition, finally out in the world, finding its place. I’ve loved hearing people’s reactions, how they’re drawn to the contrast in colours, the push and pull between warmth and coolness. It’s the only painting I’ve ever made quite like this, which is probably why I’ve kept it to one side. It holds a moment in time, a shift, a pause. And maybe that’s why people connect with it, because we all have those moments, where everything changes, and we find ourselves seeing the world in a new light.
