Rock Formations
On the 15th of December 2017, I stood at the edge of the Grand Canyon, utterly spellbound. The sheer scale of it was overwhelming, the way the rock formations stretched endlessly to the horizon, their layers revealing stories millions of years old. The colours shifted with the changing light, deep oranges and reds melting into cooler blues. In that moment, I knew I had to capture it on canvas.

At the time, I had a studio in the Custard Factory in Birmingham. The space was filled with creative energy, and the light streaming through the windows made it the perfect place to paint. Back home, I immersed myself in the memory of that awe-inspiring landscape, layering each brushstroke with the same warmth and depth I had felt standing at the canyon’s edge. The painting became more than just an artwork – it was an experience.
In 2019, this piece was exhibited at Lichfield Cathedral, a setting just as grand in its own way. Seeing it displayed against such an incredible backdrop was a special moment, reinforcing the journey this painting had taken.

For years, it hung in my studio, always in the background as I embarked on new series and explored new ideas. It became a familiar presence, a reminder of the vastness of nature and the power of a single moment of inspiration. Now, it’s ready for a new home, to bring that same sense of wonder, space, and adventure to someone else. Just as the canyon left me in awe, I hope this painting inspires whoever owns it next.
