Coastal Breeze: A Vast Horizon
On the 14th of June 2017, I set off before dawn, my car packed with paints, brushes, and excitement. I had been invited as a Wild Card for Landscape Artist of the Year in Redcar, a golden opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. At the time, I was living down south, and the drive was a long one – a true pilgrimage north. But every mile was fuelled by excitement, a sense of adventure bubbling within me. The thought of painting in the open air, with the vast Yorkshire coastline as my muse, filled me with an almost electric anticipation.
Upon arrival, the sea breeze welcomed me, the sky a stunning mix of blues and whites. Behind us stretched a breath taking view, one I wasn’t assigned to paint but knew I had to capture. I took as many photos as I could, determined to recreate it at home.
The film crew directed us to our painting spot. Boats weren’t my usual subject, but I set up my easel and painted. If you watch the programme’s opening scenes, you’ll see me, brush in hand, lost in the moment.
Once home, I brought the coastal scene to life. Each brushstroke transported me back to that breezy day—the wind in my hair, the scent of the sea, the endless horizon.
This painting is more than just art; it’s a portal to that experience. On grey mornings, it revives the thrill of that journey. On busy afternoons, it offers a breath of fresh sea air. It reminds me why I paint, not just to create, but to feel, to be present, to capture the world’s beauty. Every time I look at it, I’m there again, heart full of joy, standing before the endless horizon.
This painting holds the spirit of a bright, breezy day on the Yorkshire coast – a moment of pure inspiration. It has been my window to that memory, but now it’s time for it to bring that same joy, freedom, and serenity to a new home. Exhibited widely, it debuted at The Great Yorkshire Show in 2017, sharing its story with many along the way.
