Sweeping Meadows

On the 19th of October 2014, I set myself a challenge to complete a painting a day for 30 days. I wanted to push myself, to work quickly and instinctively, capturing fleeting moments without overthinking. This challenge marked the beginning of something new: painting on small square boards. It was a game-changer. The smooth surface allowed the oil paint to glide in a way that felt completely different from canvas, making the whole process feel effortless, fluid. The squares were also perfect for launching my Instagram account, allowing me to share my daily progress and connect with a wider audience.

Working small was a challenge, but I embraced it. It even made plein air painting easier, no more canvases flying down the hillside, caught in the wind! But I didn’t stop at 30 days. From 2014 to 2016, I painted hundreds of these little artworks, capturing different landscapes, different places, refining my process with every brushstroke. It revolutionised my art practice. Suddenly, I had work that was accessible for craft and art fairs. I was absolutely thrilled when The Art Market in Holmfirth accepted my application, and the local art shop in town framed and displayed a selection of my paintings on their walls. Watching them sell, knowing they were finding new homes, was an incredible learning curve.

The following year, I was invited to exhibit at the Great Yorkshire Show Art Pavilion, a huge milestone. As part of it, I had to do a live painting demonstration, something I had never done before. I was both excited and nervous, so I practiced at home, painting while talking to a camera. It was a challenge; I’d get so lost in the painting that I’d forget to speak!

This particular painting was the first one I did while practicing for that demonstration. It captured everything I loved about the process, the sweeping movement of the landscape, the expressive sky, the freedom of painting quickly yet with intent. I was so pleased with it that it became the first painting I showcased on the Great Yorkshire Show walls. Now, it’s ready for its next home, carrying with it the energy of that journey, the excitement of discovery, and the pure joy of painting.
