Midnight Summer Storm

By June of 2014, life was a whirlwind. I had been painting non-stop, juggling projects, exhibitions, and commissions, but I still wasn’t prepared for the reality of filling three meters of gallery space on Brick Lane in London. The show was in July, and time was running out. I needed something powerful, something that would hold the space and command attention. That’s when I decided on a small series of three paintings, three atmospheric landscapes that would work together as a set.

This series has always been one of my favourites. There’s something about the limited palette, the deep, brooding tones, and the heavy, dramatic clouds that I find endlessly captivating. Each painting explores a different moment, different light, different energy, yet they are all connected. I wanted to capture the weight of the sky, that feeling of vastness stretching over the land, a reminder of nature’s sheer presence.

Woolley Edge, the view in this piece, has always been special to me. It’s a place I return to time and time again. The layers of land rolling into the distance, the storm clouds shifting above, it’s a scene that holds a quiet power. There’s a stillness in the landscape, but also movement in the sky, a tension that keeps the painting alive.

Looking at it now, I remember the urgency of that time, the late nights in the studio, the excitement of preparing for a London show. But beyond that, this painting stands on its own. It tells a story of place, of light and shadow, of atmosphere. That’s why I love it. And that’s why I know it will resonate with someone else too.
